The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) recently published the Climate Change Bill for comment, which may have a significant impact on your operations.

The Bill acknowledges that climate change caused by humans represents an urgent threat to South Africa which require an effective, progressive and incremental response. One of the goals of the Bill is to provide for a coordinated and integrated response to climate change and its impacts by government and society alike.

In terms of the Bill National, Provincial and Municipal government will have certain duties with regards to Climate Change. In addition, greenhouse gas emission targets and budgets will be set for certain industries, who will have to implement greenhouse gas mitigation plans. Synthetic greenhouse gas emissions will have to be phased out.

Comments must be submitted by 27 May 2022.
